Three Augusta area residents were arrested this week on federal felony charges involving a fake court fine scam to dupe innocent Oregon residents into paying non-existent “contempt of court” fines for missing jury duty – and it was run by a prolific state prison inmate who has been charged with crimes across Georgia.

Alleged ringleader and family patriarch Jay Byron Wright has a vast record that including a burglary conviction in Columbia County and Richmond County. Many of the convictions are out of Douglas County, Georgia and Gwinnett County.

With a criminal record dating back almost two decades, Wright is currently serving time in a state prison in Calhoun County – and it is not clear what Augusta prison was involved. Wright has been convicted of racketeering, extortion, theft, forgery,  burglary and much more (scroll down to see his file)

The suspects  have been being indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Aiken, SC.
The trio – all members and former of one family – “engaged in a scheme to falsely and fraudulently obtained money by falsely representing themselves as officers of the court” and tricked people into using the Green Dot to pay court fines that did not exist.

Georgia prison inmate Jay Byron Wright is charged in federal court with attempt and conspiracy to commit mail fraud
His daughter, Christine Wright of Aiken is charged with attempt and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Barbara Lynn Clayton is charged with attempt and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Clayton “was the wife of Christine Wright,” according to the federal indictment.

The alleged Dec. 2016 scam involves “Green Dot Money Pak cards” that are “prepaid cash-value debit cards known as Money Pack cards,” the indictment states.
Green Dot was a Pasadena, California based company “offering loadable debit cards” and “pre-loaded cash-value” Money Pak cards, the indictment states.
The Aiken-based federal case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Winston D. Holliday and U.S. Attorney Beth Drake.

Here is a portion of the indictment:

Aiken Christopher Seigler 1 hild pornInstead of the 90-day slap on the wrist, Seigler could have received 10 years in state prison – and officials truly down played this sentencing in the media. It seems some were duped.
He can thank Second Judicial Circuit Judge Doyet A. Early III of Bamburg, SC

He pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to court records. Four other counts were dismissed.

Second Judicial Circuit Judge Doyet A. Early IIISecond Judicial Circuit Judge Doyet A. Early III sentenced Seigler to seven years suspended to 90 days active, followed by five years probation, records show.

That means he was out in 90 days.

After prison, he registered as a sex offender.

Seigler’s defense attorney was Brian Katonak.

The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office prosecuted Seigler.

Seigler was arrested on Aug. 4, 2015 after he sent a child pornography related file two months earlier to Aiken County Sheriff’s Office investigator

Child pornography and file sharing software were found on an electronic device seized from Seigler’s home.

Plus a suspect in an Aiken, SC shooting last week was arrested yesterday.

Barton Chapel Road: Shooting #4

Little is known about a possible fatal shooting and robbery reported about 5:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017 at or near 2664 Barton Chapel Road in south Augusta.

An officer on the scene radioed the victim “is dead.”

However shortly after the shooting a lookout was broadcast for three armed suspects in connection with a robbery. Three black males, one with deadlocks and one wearing a navy blue of black hoodie and blue jean shorts and the third was listed by name – that we have been unable to confirm. Richmond County officials requested a Georgia State Patrol helicopter to assist in a search of several wooded areas.

Its not clear if the shooting was connected to several developments shortly after the crime:

An hour later a car was  found with a gun in in at the end of Railroad Ave.

And Tuesday night police from Georgia and South Carolina chased a felony suspects into North Augusta – and he soon wrecked or stopped and ran – and was apparently taken into custody.
